La Vie en Rose

the other night i heard about john galliano's drunken hateful rant, and subsequent implosion, and i can't stop thinking about it. perhaps it is all the annoying sheen talk that is in such sharp contrast that keeps my mind wandering back..i don't know.

i have always argued that many artists who are considered geniuses are not the nicest people.. to say the least. and it is important to separate the artist from the work.

do i need to think that monsieur galliano is a nice guy in order to appreciate his talent? i say adamantly no. i realize that we are living in a time when there is absolutely no privacy and that anything you say (if you are muy famoso) will be broadcast around the globe in a millisecond..and if you want to keep your job as head of house at dior you ought not to go on a jew hating rant..but does that make the clothes not good anymore?

not that anti semites are my personal fave..but i can think of a few others who fall into the catagory of "not nice guys" who also have made what i consider to be great work.

and my thought is that long after these people are gone..their work will still be here, and we should be able to enjoy what they make without worrying so much about their personal foibles...though they be many. the end!
